Ean Smit obtained the degrees BMus (cum laude) and BMus (Hons) from the Stellenbosch University Music Department studying with the internationally acclaimed and celebrated South African concert pianist, the late Professor Lionel Bowman. He studied the organ with the well-known organist Bouwdewijn Scholten. Ean furthered his studies in chamber music under the late professor Lamar Crowson at the SACM before joining the CAPAB Opera Company in 1982 as rehearsal pianist. In 1988 he was promoted to Head of Musical Studies. His duties involved the musical preparation of all local singers (professionals as well as young artists) for all CAPAB Opera and Cape Town Opera productions. Musical preparation also included Musicals, Studio productions (in collaboration with the SACM Opera School), concerts, educational school tours all well as all Cape Town Opera’s international tours.
Over the years he collaborated very closely with many international singers and conductors. He acted regularly as accompanist for singers and instrumentalists. In 1993 he was awarded a CAPAB Opera Bursary for overseas studies. This trip took him to the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the State Opera and Volksoper in Vienna, the Bavarian State Opera and the Gärtnerplatztheater in Münich, the German Opera on the Rhine in Düsseldorf and Duisburg as well as the Opera Bastille in Paris. He has been acting as a part-time Vocal Coach for the SACM Opera School since 2016.
